A little beyond just basics.

Getting your site recognized

If you have a free website to start with, like geocities or tripod, one of the first things that you want to do is align your site with one of the groupings that they provide. This lets other members of that service know that your site exists.

Next you'll want to submit your site to several search engines. You can either do that individually or go to a free submissions site and submit to several search engines all at one time.

There are also a number of webrings (Sites all related by interests) that you could join. They all link to each other and that in itself will help to raise your recognition value by the major search engines. One of the things that a search engine looks for when rating sites is the number of other sites that are linked to you.

Another thing that helps is link exchanges. Exchange your link with other people who also have websites, you can start with friends and acquaintances. You'll both be promoting each other. Or exchange banners, more on that later.

Those are all external things that you can do. Here are some internal things to do.

When formatting your HTML page include a brief description in the <title></title> portion. Search engines use all the words in a title when doing their searching. The title is included in the <head></head> portion of your html page.

Include Metatags in the head of your html page, too. Pay particular attention to keywords and descriptions of the website and do this for every page you create. There is a metatag builder on this website to help you out with all of that.
